Is God Good?

Is God Good?

Is God Good?

Is God good?

Just last weekend we watched as the news outlets reported to us about another terrorist bombing. We have connections there in Burkina Faso. A woman has lost her husband. Children have lost a father. This man was serving Jesus working to tell the people of Burkina Faso how much God loves them. Now he is gone.

Here in my local area a woman died trying to pick up her husband who had fallen out of his motorized chair. She froze to death because of the cold temperatures. Her husband had to watch her die, unable to do anything.

Does God see this? Does God care that these horrible things are happening here?

This week we have been in our third week of our study in the book of Job. Job is struggling with some of the same questions. In chapter 12 we see that he clearly knows that God is powerful and capable of doing what needs to be done, but Job is at a loss as to why God is choosing to allow the agony to continue.

I don’t know why God allowed Satan to test Job the way he did. I do know that God is good.

How can you trust a God who may choose to allow you to lose everything the ways Job did? How can you trust a God who may simply destroy everything you ever cared about? It seems so hard to wrap your mind around.

Let’s face it the idea is terrifying.

Let’s head over to Ephesians Chapter 2.

“Once you were dead, doomed forever because of your many sins. You used to live just like the rest of the world, full of sin, obeying Satan, the mighty prince of the power of the air. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God….But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so very much, that while we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s special favor that you have been saved!)” Ephesians 2:1-2, 4-5

Sin entered into the world by way of Adam and Eve. They chose to believe Satan and disobey God. Because of their sin all of mankind were born into sin. That is what we see so much of today all around us. You can watch it on the news, you can feel it as you ask the question How can God let these horrible things happen?

God is Good and we can see it in how he loved us.

Yet God is more concerned about our eternal souls than he is about our present comfort. God knows that our lives are but a breath and what really matters is where we will be spending eternity. So God took action. He sent Jesus to the earth to pay the price for our sinful state.

Read that passage from Ephesians again:

Once you were dead… But He gave us life!

I know the suffering and pain we see in this world is overwhelming and discouraging. But we do have a hope that rises above anything else. God has provided a way for us to be saved.
