The book America the Strong by William J. Bennett and John T.E. Cribb is a book that outlines some general principles that guide conservative thinking in America today. The book is easy to read and goes into detail over several topics that are relevant to politics, and the managing of our country today. These topics include but are not limited to: higher education, abortion, federal debt and marijuana. The beginning of the book gives some general principles about what guides conservative thinking today, and the rest of the book breaks down how these principles are put into practice today.
This book would make a good supplement to a high school government class. In the introduction the author explains that the book is geared towards young adults and college students. The author seems to believe that young people today would be interested in reading a book on conservative ideas. I am not so sure I would agree with him. I really do not know many young people who would pick up a book about conservative ideal for reading on their own. I think a young person might read this book if it were assigned as an extra credit for a high school government class.
The content of the book is good and for the most part useful. There are several areas where the book feels redundant, especially in regards to the federal debt and other topics dealing with government spending. I felt like I read the exact same paragraph at least 4 times. Like certain paragraphs were copy and pasted to different sections of the book. I found this to be rather frustrating. It seemed like the author was not expecting someone to actually read the book in its entirety.
Over all I found this to be an informative book. I personally have not done much reading in the area of politics. I don’t recommend this book for pleasure reading, but if you are seeking to grow your understanding of politics in our nation the book America the Strong would be a good place to start.
The co-authors William J. Bennett and John T.E. Cribb have worked together on several projects such as The American Patriot’s Almanac and The Educated Child and several others. In addition William J. Bennett is the former US Secretary of Education and current host of the seventh-ranked nationally syndicated radio program Morning in America.
I think that Mr. Bennett’s history as the US Secretary of Education has given him a desire to educate today’s young people in what conservatism really is, in light of the strong liberal leaning of many of our colleges and universities today. I believe his motive is a good one. I hope that he succeeds in re-educating this generation what conservatism really is about and how it can bless our nation.
